Why I chose Hannibal

I chose to do my website on Hannibal Barca, one of the Romans worst enemies. What caught my attention was how rebellious he was. I first heard about him when we were learning about the Second Punic War. After hearing what I had about him, I decided to look into his journey further. His actions surprised me ever since he was 9 years old and made the promise to his Dad about always hating the Romans. Especially about how he fulfilled his promise and probably ventured into it more than his father expected. Although he was on the rough end of all the wars and actions, he was a strongly dedicated general. His accomplishments weren't much, but they were a piece of his history. Hannibal will always be remembered as the most competative and  dedicated general that he was. He is also a strong symbol of the ancient wars for Rome.

Battle of Cannae

In the spring of 216 BC, Hannibal took the initiative and seized the large supply depot at Cannae. By capturing Cannae, Hannibal had placed himself between the Romans and their crucial sources of supply. During the occurance, the Romans were rebuilding their army. The Romans then set out to find and confront Hannibal. They found him on a riverbank and they set up and camped 6 miles away.Hannibal soon caught on to the surprise attack and he atttacked them when they least expected it. He took out a good chunk of their army but the Romans soon revolted back. The Romans forced their way through Hannibal's weak center and began to take control. After Cannae, the Romans were very hesitant to confront Hannibal in pitched battle. As a result of this victory, many parts of Italy joined Hannibal's cause.

Battle of Trasimene

The Battle of Trasimene took place after the Battle of Trebia. It began with Hannibal wanting to move his army to a better location but found it difficult to move because the two new consuls of Rome expected Hannibal to attack. Therefore, the eastern and western entrances (the only two entrances) were blocked with Roman troops. The only other route to Italy was a huge marsh and was also flooding more than usual at this time, but Hannibal's army marched through for 4 days and 3 nights through "the land underwater". Hannibal's plan was to make Flaminous look powerless and take over another section to the Roman empire. His plan was executed and not completely accomplished. This became the most costly ambush to the Romans. Instead Romans had a new general and he followed in the path of Hannibal's destruction. Yet, Hannibal passed him by and hid throughout the winter in the low plains just outside Rome's entrance. Although Hannibal knew he couldn't take the capital at this point so his new plan was to conquer outter parts of Italy and plan a revolt on the Roman Capital.

Who is Hannibal?

Hannibal, also known as Hannibal Barca, was an important figure during the Rise of Rome. "Hannibal" meant "joy of Baal" while "Barca" meant "lightning". This man was one of Rome's worst enemies. He was also known to be one of the greatest Carthaginian military generals. He lived from 247 BC to 183 BC although he didn't die from war with Rome, he died years after the war with Rome by committing suicide by ingesting poison. It is said that when Hannibal was young, his father took him to a temple and made him swear to hate the Romans forever. Hannibal definately lived up to his promise to his father and probably caused more infliction upon the Romans than his father might have expected. Hannibal led the Carthaginians across what is now Spain to create the beginning of the Second Punic War. Hannibal is known to be great because of his travel across the alps consisting of 50,000 troops, 6,000 horsemen and many elephants. Although losing the Second Punic War, Hannibal proceeded to win battles for 15 years.
